Vegetable Gardening Saves Us Money
Friday, February 11th, 2011During the last several years we have observed vegetable gardening growing in number throughout the country. Why is vegetable gardening on the rise today?
Personally I’m convinced it’s for the same reason we started a vegetable garden, to spend less at the grocery store. Lacking employment stability, rising prices and no raises at work along with a tough economy that simply will not go away is an excellent motivator to start your own vegetable garden.
We were feeling the pinch, like so many others, we decided to try our hand at vegetable gardening to save what money we could. The plan worked for us, we saved money and found gardening is really satisfying as well as rewarding.
Surprise, Surprise We Actually Grew Healthy Vegetables
As a kid growing up on a farm we had a huge garden that needed pulling weeds, Dad got to use the hoe while we kids had to crawl around weeding by hand. Of course weeding was a chore I didn’t care much for. Today I get to use the hoe to take care of unwanted weeds, just like my dad used to do.
We All Make Mistakes, Learn From Them And Grow As A Gardener
Mistakes are part of how people learn. It doesn’t matter if you are learning how to drive a car or planting your first tomato plant. I’m the guy that just jumps into things with out always thinking first so I have made my share of screwups, the key is to not give up trying after your first mistake. Home gardening has a learning curve like most things in life, so just learn from your mistakes and keep on growing.
Herb Gardening Indoors Is Worth Trying
Spring, summer and fall were over way too soon. It was going to be months before I could start a new garden. So, I decided it would be interesting to try my hand at growing a few kitchen herbs right in the kitchen.
To our great delight growing a kitchen herb garden on a windowsill in our kitchen is easier to grow than I thought. It’s great having a fresh supply of the herbs we like the most.
Vegetables Are Tastier, Healthier And Less Expensive To Grow Organically
It’s really a miracle we survived growing up with all the chemicals that were sprayed on our garden vegetables. These days I actually raise vegetables without chemicals.
We use compost we produce in our very own compost bin as well as adding peatmoss to loosen up the dense clay soil. Doing this assists in growing healthy root systems for our veggies and allows water to drain quicker than it ever did when it was just dense clay.
In Conclusion
If you haven’t tried vegetable gardening yet it’s a great way to save a bit of money on that grocery bill. It all helps and you may just find you have a new hobby as well.
